LXPlan runs on Windows and Linux computers that have a Java(tm) runtime installed. Unlike LXFree for MacOS, LXPlan also has advanced features that make it similar to LXBeams when an LXSeries Pro license is installed. LXPlan is sibling of LXFree that runs on Windows and Linux using Java.

LXFree is available as a native application on Mac OS X. Giving away the basic application builds a strong foundation for meeting this goal. LXFree is, as its name implies, totally free to use for non-commercial purposes! Here's why: The goal of the LX Series is to make great and low cost software tools available to lighting designers. Connect a Chromateq hardware device to unlock programming capabilities that transform any computer. LXFree produces reports by linking the graphics, attached data, and additional databases related to the properties of these objects. All Chromateq software is always free to download and learn. LXFree combines drawing a light plot with editing information associated with graphic objects in the drawing.

Vectorworks does have a free student version! The information on how to get it is on their website.LXFree is an application for drawing light plots and generating paperwork. There is an update due pretty much any time.Īlong more commercial lines, do I not recall that Vectorworks was offering free educational versions? Be warned that the 2009 version does not get along well with Windows 7. It’s a free (for personal use) version of a pretty complete AutoCAD clone. You can draw plots in it, and it also has a paperwork generator component to it. Been using it for a few years now so I don’t know if there are better “free” tools out there currently.

The learning curve is minimal and I find it very easy to use, which makes generating drawings very fast. Since we use it to model sets (which is a great communication tool between directors, producers, designers), I can take the set model and add a lighting grid at the correct height and distance and build my plot. I’ve also used it to generate 2-D plots to give to my lighting techs with all the info they need to hang, aim, add accessories, program DMX channels, etc. Lights are linked to your PC or Mac by connecting an XLR cable to one of Daslights DVC4. When you’re done, easily send fixture and model information directly to Vision to previsualize, program, and cue your show. Daslight 4 can be used with any DMX512 compatible lighting fixture. Of course, it depends on the features you’re interested in SketchUp certainly isn’t a pre-viz tool but it’s great for modeling a set, calculating throw distances and angles. The seamless integration between Vectorworks Spotlight and Vision allows you to create design documents, automate paperwork, and visualize your design in rendered 3D views. I realize this isn’t the answer you’re looking for but… I’d still throw my vote in for SketchUp. I have used Google SketchUp but it was not as user friendly as I would like and does not really conform to theatrical design very well. Visual Design Software Design Confidently with Visual Software Visual Lighting You can download the Visual Lighting software and start your free 1- month. I’m looking for a free CAD program that students can download for set/lighting design.
